Our First Full Day in Colombia

Our day once again started off later than anticipated BUT Derek had a great point, it is Sunday and we are 3 hours behind 😉

a

We wokeup just in time for our breakfast to be delivered to our room at 9:00 AM. Given our room is so tiny we decided to eat outside by the pool.

a

It was wonderful! Fresh squeezed orange juice, cafe con leche, dedos de queso (deep-fried cheese bread) and arepas de huevo (fired maize dough with an egg inside) plus fresh fruit. It was delicious but since i haven’t really eaten breakfast in 9 months my body was a little in shock. Needless to say it still hit the spot after a late night (we were up until after 2 am!!) it was an eventful and fun night 🙂

a

After our breakfast and a much needed siesta we were ready to go and leave our tiny room by 11:00 AM.

a

We felt like we got a late start but the town was just waking up. We ventured out to walk “the wall” and brave the heat. Honestly I had no idea it would be this hot….I aw 80 degrees but I failed to notice that the heat index was over 100.

aa

We walked the wall which which bordered Old Town which is “witout a doubt Cartagena’s principal attraction”.

aa

Sunday was sleepy but there were still a lot of street vendors out asking if we wanted to purchase hats, jewerry, water, beer, cigars and other local flavors.

aa

I learned in Loney Planet to simply say “no quiero nada” and some locals thought I knew Spanish 🙂 I am doing much better than I ever have with my Spanish….just being super confident and smiling a lot and trying, which is all that matters.

After an hour or so walking we were over heated and needed break for agua. We stopped in San Diego for a break and I got to choose the lunch spot! I decided on La Cevicheria which Loney Planet said “At this once little-known spot prized by locals, the superb ceviche has in reent years drawn celebrity chefs and travel magazines” We had a 30 min wait but I gave my number in Espanol to the server and we went to Cuba 1940, which was on Sebastian’s list! They have live music which we will definitely be back for.

After dos mojitos our table was ready at La Cevicheria. We got a prime location that felt like the chef’s table, inside with the AC. During our lunch a fuse blew but came back on shortly. There was even a picture of Anthony Bourdain over our booth! Prime location.

a

Lunch was muy muy bien Derek got ceviche and I got shrimp and curry and coconut rice.

a

After lunch I led the way back to our hotel where we rested, watched Americam football and I went for some pool time.

a

After a longer than anticipated nap, we woke up missing the sunset 😦 I guess the heat and the time change took it out of us.

a

We made up for it quickly by heading to Cuba 1940 for dinner and live music. It was SO much fun.

After dinner we ventured to a really fun cigar bar for open mic night and a nightcap. I loved how they did “shots” when you order one they class it up and bring the whole bottle and pour it for you. It was so much fun a d we loved looking at the art…I might cone back and get a piece I loved but offer half what they were asking to see if they go for it.

After some great live music we ventured back and another lesson learned, when you walk through the squares with left over food you are not only a target but you will be verbally assaulted if you dont hand over your food. Luckily we had just purchased some snacks and put our left overs promptly into our bag.

We arrived back home with some snacks that’s I’m super excited about…
